Continuing Education On Steel

This entry was posted in Steel Industry, Working At Westfield Steel on by .

Even though some of our employees in our administrative and corporate office have not worked directly with steel in the past or on a regular basis, it’s still important for them to have an understanding of the history of steel and what is involved in the process of its creation. Providing this education to our employees gives them a better appreciation of our industry, how we fit in it, and how we carry out our mission and vision.

On May 23rd and 24th, our Controller, Jennifer Dixon, and Abby Olson, our Human Resources Manager attended Steel School in the South Carolina Mill of CMC – Commercial Metals. On the first day, Jennifer and Abby spent time learning about the CMC way of doing business. They were educated about the company history and the process of making steel. Jennifer and Abby were taught from industry professionals about the Melt Shop, the Rolling Mill, Customer Service, Metallurgy, Industry Standards, and their IT. There was a team-based approach to learning, with hands-on activities to learn about the chemistry of the metal and the efficiencies of the facility.

The second day of steel school was spent enjoying a thorough tour of the CMC Steel Mill. Safety is very important, especially at a steel mill. You can tell by the picture below that both of them were decked out in safety gear. The fast-paced two days spent by Jennifer and Abby in South Carolina gave them the opportunity to learn more about the industry, more about the products they sell and an appreciation of the process of making steel.
